A) Lis les textes ici et fais les activités A,B et C sur la fiche "The Highland Games"
The "Highlands" is a region in Scotland. It is situated in the extreme north of the country. There are a lot of mountains in the Highlands. The most famous mountain is Ben Nevis, which is also the highest mountain in Great Britain. There are also a lot of lakes too. The most famous lake is "Loch Ness". Some people say that there is a monster in the lake ! There are a lot of islands which form part of the region. The most famous islands in the Highlands are "The Isle of Skye", "The Isle of Muck" and "The Orkney Islands" (which are the northermost isles of Great Britain). There are, in fact, nearly 800 islands on the coasts of Scotland.
There are annual events in the region called "The Highland Games". They are similar to the Olympic Games. They started in the 11th Century. Men and women meet in various villages in the summer and take part in sporting competitions. There are a lot of disciplines similar to those that we see in the Olympic Games.
Two of the most popular disciplines are the "throwing" competitions. The Caber Toss is a very difficult discipline. The athletes have to throw an enormous wooden pole as far as they can. It requires a lot of strength and technique. And then there is the "Stone Put". This discipline is similar to the "shot put" that we see in athletics meetings and in the Olympic Games. The difference is that, instead of throwing a heavy ball, the athletes must throw an enormous stone (almost as big as a rock!). And of course the other difference is that the male athletes are dressed in traditional Scottish kilts.
The "Tug of War" is also a very popular competition. It is a team game. Two teams have to pull a very long rope. There is a line in the middle, between the two teams. The team which can pull the other team over the line is the winner.
But the most popular discipline is certainly "The kilted dash". It is a 60 metre sprint. But the men who run in this race all wear kilts. However the rules state that the athletes must wear underpants !
