A)Read the text to complete the worksheet and answer the question : Who are the Smarteez ?
The Smarteez are part of a young generation of South Africans who were born after the struggles against Apartheid. They are recognizable by their dress code. They always wear smart, brightly-coloured clothes which distinguish them from the majority of young people. This subculture has developed in the township of Soweto, Johannesburg over the last fifteen years.
The Smarteez admit that they are different from the preceeding generation of black South Africans. Even if they live in a nation which must still combat poverty, disease and corruption, they are less commited to political issues. Instead, they struggle against blandness and conformity and fight for self-expression by challenging stereotypes. They refuse to be defined by roots or race. They want to take control of their identity and they use fashion as a means of expression and a declaration of freedom.
